On religion…

I recently read a post/tweet, that historically, people embraced religion as a form of safety and security, an answer to all their life’s problems. But that today, we have better opportunities, hence we should move beyond (religion) and evolve into something new.

I think that’s a little myopic and somewhat factually incorrect.

I believe religion serve better deal than finding solutions to life’s woes from the man in the sky.

First of all, religion is about relationship, relationship with the superior or the Supreme, from realms beyond the physical.

Religion is a journey of discovery, knowing that life is not just about the physical, but that there are many layers to it. And whether it is God or Mother Nature, there is the longing to connect with that ‘thing’.

Religion is about worship, an adoration, consecrated, dedication to whatever you believe in, a voluntary/involuntary decision to submit to that Sovereign being, and follow whatever He/She/It commands.

Religion is a way of life. It significantly alters the outlook/perspective to life. It impacts on your dressing, how you spend your money, how you spend your time, all because you want to make the object of your worship happy.

Religion is about association. You are part of a community. And that community adores a deity or a supreme being.

And yes, religion is a safety net, providing a sense of security for now and perhaps hereafter, providing a boost of courage to face your world, arming you with the necessary weapons to navigate life, helping you to break above barriers, and empowering you to achieve your full potential.

So, thinking that people engage in religion because they want to collect goody bags from a Man up in the sky is essentially incorrect.

Should we engage in religion/religions/religious activities, I believe the answer is individualised. Your worship, your choice.

If you think the whole concept of connecting to a Superior/Supreme Being is obsolete, I believe such decisions should be respected, but you should also respect the chooses to believe in a God.

Whom you believe in or whether it’s the right or wrong way or the extent one should be involved with religion is however another kettle of fish, a discussion for another day.
